Can Dash Cams Can Lower Insurance Costs ?

Updated: May 10, 2022

The truth is that, insurance companies generally don't offer discounts for dashcams, but they can help you avoid an increase in your insurance rate by providing evidence that you weren't at fault in an accident.

Now there is more evidence that using dash cameras does improve driver behavior and its a powerful tool to stay ahead of potential situations and incidents that will negatively affect your cost of insurance, for example:

Study conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI)

"An event-based video system, combined with a driver behavior modification system, accounted for estimated reductions in fatal and injury crashes of 20 percent and 35 percent respectively. Having the unique ability to view the specific behaviors taking place — as well as the circumstances leading up to them — can help you provide more effective driver coaching to prevent future occurrences."

A study from the University of Nottingham of 669 HGV (Heavy Good Vehicles)

study has shown HGV drivers drive much more safely when there are cameras in their cabs monitoring their behavior.

Computer scientists and driving psychologists from the University of Nottingham analyzed data collected before and after the installation of unobtrusive cameras in the cabs of Heavy Good Vehicles (HGV) and found there is a significant reduction of risky driving behaviors with camera monitoring, and that this is even more effective when coupled with coaching. Their findings have been published in the Accident Analysis and Prevention journal.
